White Sox sign recently released Braves right-handed reliever to minor league contract

The Chicago White Sox on Saturday signed veteran right-handed reliever Javy Guerra to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Charlotte. The move comes two days after he was released by the Atlanta Braves’ Triple-A affiliate, the Gwinnett Stripers.

Guerra, 30, returned to the United States this offseason after spending the previous two seasons with the Nippon Professional Baseball’s Hanshin Tigers. In 2024 with Hanshin, he finished with a 1.55 ERA over 58 innings while earning 14 saves. During that season, he also improved his command, limiting opponents to a 4.9% walk rate. However, his second year in Japan was limited, as he appeared in only six games.

Guerra originally rejoined MLB organizations in January when he signed a minor league deal with the Braves. With Gwinnett, he logged a 5.68 ERA and 1.78 WHIP across 25.1 innings in 16 appearances. During that stretch, he struck out 17 batters while issuing 20 walks. He also had a difficult spring training, allowing five earned runs in just 2 2/3 innings.

Across his major league career, Guerra has appeared in parts of five seasons, primarily with the San Diego Padres. He last pitched in the majors in 2023 with the Tampa Bay Rays.
