What Dave Canales said about Panthers fight sparked by cheap shot, Bryce Young trash talk

The Carolina Panthers have already had an eventful training camp. Carolina has already lost multiple players to season-ending injuries about halfway through camp. Now the Panthers are back in the headlines after a brawl at Monday’s training camp practice.

Panthers head coach Dave Canales shared his opinion on the scuffle with the media after practice.

“We had a little bit of a scuffle out there and the response afterwards was more physicality. And that’s exactly what we should be. We’ve gotta tiptoe that line. When we’re in pads, we’ve gotta play football. That’s the bottom line,” Canales said. per The Athletic’s Joe Person. “But there’s some situations where we can be smarter and take care of each other. I think that’s what the frustration was ultimately about. But I’m all for it.”

Panthers QB Bryce Young instigated the fight by jumping to the defense of teammate Jonathon Brooks.

Lathan Ransom and Nick Scott delivered a shot on Brooks at the line of scrimmage that had Young chirping back at his defensive teammates. That caused the offensive line to get involved and back up their franchise quarterback.

Young was likely being protective of Brooks, who is finally back from his ACL injury. Brooks could be a significant player on Carolina’s offense this fall if he can stay healthy.

Once tempers settled, all of the Panthers players involved reportedly talked it out in a lengthy 20-minute discussion. They also shared some nuanced opinions of their own with reporters.

Scott explained how he determines how much pressure to apply during training camp practices.

“Void of like a defenseless receiver, if I feel like I have an opportunity to really lay into somebody and I would do it in a game, I’m gonna do it here in practice, with the exception of wrapping up and bringing ‘em down,” Scott said.

Ultimately, it is good to see that everyone’s head was in the right place following the altercation.

It will be exciting to see the Panthers unleash some of that energy on their opponents during the 2026 season later this fall.
