What Alex Cora said about watching Garrett Crochet’s mind-boggling 11-run start

The Boston Red Sox got smacked in the first few innings of their game Monday against the Minnesota Twins. Red Sox starter Garrett Crochet allowed 11 runs in the first two innings. Following the debacle, Boston’s manager Alex Cora tried to explain what he watched.

“As a manager, it’s hard to watch. It was kind of like, OK, when are we going to take him out, you know?” Cora said, per ESPN. “At the same time, you still have to cover innings and keep the bullpen quote-unquote fresh, knowing that there’s two more games in the series.”

Minnesota went on to defeat Boston, 13-6. The Red Sox dropped to 6-10 on the season. Crochet was frustrated to see his worst start of his career.

“My command, as a whole, has been spotty,” Crochet said. “I’ve gotten away with it a little this early in the year, but tonight, they made me pay. It was weak contact, hard contact, walks, hit by pitch — a little bit of everything.”

The Red Sox hurler hopes to forget about this lousy start as soon as possible. He allowed 10 earned runs before getting pulled in the second inning.

“I’m just going to flush it as best I can and move on to the next one,” Crochet said. “They had a good approach.”

Crochet hit a a Twins batter with a pitch, while also allowing three walks. He failed to record a strikeout for the first time in 68 career starts, ESPN reported. He also had his fastball average just 94.5 miles per hour.

“I don’t really have one thing to point to,” Crochet said. “I feel like I had a good approach. It was all pitch types that I felt like they were absolutely smothering.”

The Red Sox take on the Twins again Tuesday night. Following the win, Minnesota is now 10-7 on the season.
