Watch Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama stun Thunder early with bonkers shooting
Whether it be because he ran out of gas or the pressure got to him a bit, Victor Wembanyama had an unusually underwhelming offensive performance in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals. He scored 20 points on just 4-of-15 shooting in the San Antonio Spurs’ 127-114 road loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder and controversially left the arena without speaking to the media, causing many to wonder how the 7-foot-4 superstar would handle a must-win Game 6.
Through two quarters of play, it appears Wembanyama has returned to his old juggernaut self. He exhilarated Frost Bank Center early, knocking down back-to-back 3-pointers and recording two blocks within the first three minutes of play. He drilled a step-back trey near the end of the opening frame, making it crystal clear that there is no carryover from his rough showing on Tuesday.

The fabulous Frenchman set the tone with the season on the line, and his teammates have followed suit. The Spurs led 35-22 after 12 minutes of action. If they are going to send the series back to OKC, Victor Wembanyama will need to keep applying pressure.
The Defensive Player of the Year and San Antonio’s young core as a whole have played with poise well beyond their years during the 2026 NBA playoffs. This team responded after a Game 2 loss versus the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round, overcame a Game 1 defeat at home to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the conference semifinals and is now punching back after being thrashed by the defending champions.
This impressive ability to navigate adversity despite no prior postseason experience is a testament to Wembanyama’s greatness. The Alien must prove he can dominate in the Paycom Center in a boisterous Game 7 environment, but before such a reality can occur, the Spurs have to get the job done on Thursday night. They went into halftime with a 60-53 advantage.
