Watch Bobby Witt Jr.’s epic inside-the-park home run for Royals vs. Tigers

The Kansas City Royals are supposed to be an up-and-coming team in the American League Central Division. The Royals improved quite a bit last year when they finished with an 82-80 winning record, and many observers expected them to make a run at the division title this season.

It has not gone well to this point as the Royals are just 19-21, but this is a down year in the Al Central. They are tied for second place and they are just 2 games behind the Cleveland Guardians. The Royals have played better recently, going 7-4 in their last 11 games.

Bobby Witt delivers in unusual fashion

They started Saturday night’s game against the Detroit Tigers in excellent fashion. Their star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. got them going in the right direction when he hit an inside the park, two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. Inside the park home runs are rare to begin with, but Witt’s was unusual because it appeared to be little more than a double down the right field line.

Witt hit a hard ground ball between Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson and the foul line. The ball went into the right field corner and Detroit rightfielder Kerry Carpenter attempted to chase the ball down. Carpenter was able to get near the the wall, but the ball bounced out of his reach and went further down the right field line. Carpenter chased the ball down and was able to make a solid throw, but Witt put his speed on display from the instant he left the batter’s box.

Many players would have been able to get to third base on the play, but Witt is a dynamic speedster. He never hesitated when he hit third base and made it home, beating the relay throw by a clear second.

The play sparked the Royals and they earned a 5-1 victory over the Tigers.
