Two-time Super Bowl champion gets surprise CBS promotion as Tony Romo and J.J. Watt dominoes fall

CBS have continued to make moves.

As the Tony Romo saga is no closer to a resolution, the network was forced to put in some temporary – for now – measures to keep things at the network operating smoothly ahead of the 2026 NFL season.

Romo is currently on leave away from CBS following his arrest in July on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence (OWI).

He is due to appear in court on September 21, where he will learn his fate.

Should Romo be found guilty, then he would likely face a punishment that involves the suspension of his driver’s license, as well as a fine.

But at CBS’ annual NFL Media Day on Tuesday, Sports president and CEO David Berson refused to rule out his No. 1 analyst’s return.

“I hope you can respect and appreciate this is a personal matter, and a legal one for Tony. So I can’t speak to that aspect,” Berson said at the press conference.

“But I can say this is an evolving situation. Therefore, we’re still assessing. There’s no timetable or final decision at this time.

“In making this decision, we had to consider the impact on our image and our brand. That’s very important to us.

Changes made around Romo

In Romo’s absence CBS promoted J.J. Watt to be the lead voice in the booth alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson.

Watt’s promotion has also seen a flurry of moves cascade down, with Ian Eagle in the No. 2 booth lacking an analyst opposite him.

However, it has since been announced that CBS will be promoting Ross Tucker to that team, alongside Eagle and Evan Washburn, at least for the first two weeks of the season.

Tucker also currently covers college football for the network.

Working with Eagle is not novel for Tucker, with the two having extensive experience working together having called NFL games on the radio for Westwood One.

But him jumping up to the No. 2 booth is more of a surprise, having initially been viewed as having “a pretty good chance” to get into CBS’ fourth booth alongside Andrew Catalon.

Instead, former New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans defensive back Logan Ryan, who announced his retirement from the NFL back in 2024, looks the most likely candidate to join Catalon.

A two-time Super Bowl winner with the Patriots, Ryan spent much of the 2025 campaign working across both NFL and college football for the network, even shadowing Nantz and Romo back in November.
