Tottenham hit with devastating injury blow as midfielder suffers setback with World Cup fears

Tottenham have been dealt a further injury blow with winger Mohammed Kudus reportedly suffering a setback.

The Ghana star established himself as a key player for the north London side following his arrival from rivals West Ham last summer.

However, Kudus was forced off in the first half of the 1-1 draw with Sunderland with a quad tendon problem back in January.

The winger was expected back for the run-in, potentially starting with Sunday’s game against the Black Cats.

Spurs sit just one point above the relegation zone with seven matches of the season to go.

Newly-appointed head coach Roberto De Zerbi had hoped to call upon the Ghanian wing-wizard as the north London side look to stave off the threat of Championship football.

Kudus had scored twice and provided five assists following his £55millon transfer from the Hammers last year.

And hopes had been high about his return prior to their 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest before the international break.

Former interim manager Igor Tudor said: “We have this big three weeks after the game on Sunday.

“He will probably do some part of the things with the squad maybe 10 days [after the break]. I don’t know I’m not sure. We need to check but he is progressing very well. Already a little bit with the ball.”

Kudus suffering a setback in his recovery, according to Football.London, would be a huge blow for De Zerbi, who would be without a recognised right winger.

Key star Dejan Kulusevski has been absent for the entire season.

Meanwhile, the club sold Europa League winner Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace in January.

Tottenham are yet to confirm the issue, or reports it could require surgery.

Should the 25-year-old go under the knife, then it would throw his World Cup participation into doubt.

Ghana will hope to have one of their star men fit to feature in football’s showpiece later this year.

The Black Stars have been drawn alongside England, Croatia and Panama in Group L in North America.

Ghana face Thomas Tuchel’s England side in Boston on June 23.

The African powerhouse, who failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, do at least have Antoine Semenyo to call upon at present.

Semenyo has shone for Manchester City following his January arrival, and was directly involved in two of their four goals in their 4-0 FA Cup win over Liverpool last weekend.

Spurs could well be 18th by the time their game with Sunderland kicks off with West Ham up against Wolves on Friday night.

The Hammers aren’t in great form themselves having won only one of their last six league outings.
