Tony Vitello reacts to Giants fans mercilessly booing by blasting his team’s effort

The San Francisco Giants are mired in a difficult season, under first-year manager Tony Vitello. Vitello’s Giants got booed at home on Saturday night, during a blowout loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Vitello is opening up about hearing the fans boo the team.

“What would you do? They paid for their ticket. They chose this over everything else. I mean there’s 85 million shows you can watch on Netflix… maybe your walls are painted orange & black and this is the team your whole family for generations has supported, you got a lot invested. So you want something in return. At the very least a good effort, maybe execution here and there… it got to the point where it wasn’t an acceptable effort,” Vitello said, per KNBR Radio.

The Giants lost to the Pirates 13-3 on Saturday. San Francisco fell to 15-24 on the season, and is last in the National League West division.

The Giants’ pitchers got torched by Pittsburgh bats Saturday. San Francisco allowed 20 hits in the game. Pittsburgh scored six runs in the seventh inning alone to essentially put the game away.

“I thought we had really good at-bats early on and continued throughout the game, going the other way and doing the things that we needed to do to score runs,” Pirates manager Don Kelly said, per MLB.com. “All night I thought we had good at-bats.”

Things weren’t supposed to go like this for the Giants this season. Vitello was hired as manager after a successful tenure managing the University of Tennessee baseball team. The season now seems headed for disaster in San Francisco, unless things turn around.

San Francisco plays the Pirates again on Sunday. The Giants have now lost eight of their last 10 games.
