Timberwolves’ Jaden McDaniels talks point guard possibilities in 2026-27

The Minnesota Timberwolves fell short once again in the postseason, this time losing to the San Antonio Spurs in the second round. There were some self-inflicted issues that the Timberwolves brought upon themselves in this series, but they’re looking forward to how they can get better for next season.

One of those things is helping Anthony Edwards, whom the Spurs had a target on throughout the series as they double-teamed him a lot. That meant that someone else had to step up and make a play, and Jaden McDaniels thinks that he can take some ball-handling responsibilities after being asked if he could play more point guard.

“Yeah, I feel like there is for sure, because even in scenarios where a lot of teams trap Ant when he brings the ball up, so just knowing that I can be a second hand ballhandler, just bringing the ball up and just getting into the offense. Our offense is pretty simple so it’s not like too hard and stuff what we’ve got to do. So I’m confident and comfortable with the ball in my hand, like whoever’s guarding me, so I just feel like yeah, I can be a point guard,” McDaniels said via Andrew Dukowitz of Zone Coverage.

Having another ball-handler on the floor would be big for the Timberwolves, and that can be another layer in McDaniels’ game that could make him better.

McDaniels definitely took a leap this season, and he was key for the team in the regular season, as well as the playoffs.

It’s uncertain if other ball-handlers such as Mike Conley will be back with the Timberwolves next season, but the veteran point guard said that he wasn’t planning on retiring. Ayo Dosunmu will be a free agent this offseason, and the team may look to bring him back after how well he played after they traded for him at the deadline.
