Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards’ heartfelt Mother’s Day message after Game 4 win vs. Spurs
The Minnesota Timberwolves desperately needed a response Sunday night. Anthony Edwards delivered one fueled by something far bigger than basketball. Following Minnesota’s gritty 114-109 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 4 of the 2026 Western Conference Semifinals, Edwards opened up about the emotional inspiration behind his dominant performance.
Entering the game, the Timberwolves stared at the possibility of a devastating home loss. Edwards erupted for 36 points and later revealed the deeper motivation that pushed him through the pressure-packed night.
“Today is Mother’s Day, so I just wanted to win for my mom,” Edwards said postgame. “I couldn’t lose this game for her.”
His performance became even more meaningful considering the personal history that has long connected Edwards to Mother’s Day. Both his mother, Yvette, and grandmother, Shirley, passed away from cancer when Edwards was in eighth grade. That tragedy still fuels much of his competitive fire. Edwards has consistently honored them throughout his basketball journey. That includes wearing No. 5 in tribute to the date of their passing.

Minnesota’s victory not only evened the series but shifted momentum heading back to Texas for Game 5. Alongside contributions from Naz Reid and Rudy Gobert, Edwards ensured the Timberwolves avoided a dangerous 3-1 deficit despite a late push from San Antonio’s backcourt.
Edwards has been spectacular throughout the 2026 NBA playoffs. After battling through injuries during the first-round series against the Denver Nuggets, he has elevated his game against San Antonio. Edwards now owns 18 career playoff games with at least 30 points before age 25, tying one of the best marks in NBA history.
