Tight end commits to Penn State over Ohio State
Penn State picked up its second tight end commitment in the 2027 cycle Friday when Sean Currie announced his pledge via Rivals YouTube channel. The Lawrenceville School standout from New Jersey chose the Nittany Lions over Ohio State, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech. Currie became Penn State’s 19th known commitment at the time of his announcement and later one of 20 pledges in a class that climbed to the top of the Big Ten rankings according to 247Sports.
Listed between 6-foot-6 and 6-foot-7 and around 230-235 pounds, Currie emerged as one of the fastest-rising tight end prospects in the 2027 cycle after a productive junior season. He finished with 34 receptions for 474 yards and eight touchdowns while also contributing defensively with three sacks and two tackles for loss. Recruiting services rate Currie as a high three-star prospect. The 247Sports Composite ranks him as the No. 15 player in New Jersey, the No. 32 tight end nationally and the No. 560 overall prospect in the class.
The Nittany Lions coaching staff was influential in securing the commitment. Offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Taylor Mouser built a strong relationship with Currie during the recruiting process, and the prospect was impressed by how Mouser and head coach Matt Campbell feature tight ends in the offense. Currie studied their previous work at Iowa State and liked the versatility of the position in Penn State’s scheme.
Currie had originally committed to Virginia for both football and lacrosse before reopening his recruitment in March. He is also regarded as one of the nation’s best lacrosse players and a top-30 national prospect in that sport according to Inside Lacrosse. The Nittany Lions are confident his athletic background and change-of-direction ability will carry over well to tight end development, especially considering he only began playing football two years ago.
The spring visit to Happy Valley helped Penn State separate itself from Ohio State and Texas A&M, and Currie also valued staying closer to home. He joins South Dakota prospect Cooper Terwilliger as Penn State’s second tight end commitment in the 2027 class, which now includes five prospects from New Jersey.
