Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander reveals hand injury after Game 2 win vs. Suns

OKLAHOMA CITY — Before Jalen Williams’ night ended in the third quarter of Game 2’s 120-107 win against the Phoenix Suns, Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander sustained an injury scare in the first half. Gilgeous-Alexander’s 37 points led the way as the Thunder took a 2-0 lead in their best-of-7 first-round series.

After the win, Gilgeous-Alexander reflected on his left hand injury, which he appeared to have injured on his way down after going for a rebound in the opening frame.

“I went up. Came down and my hand was hurting,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “I haven’t seen the video of it. I don’t even know what happened. It was hurting, and it was, like, numb. Almost like I hit my funny bone in my hand. So, I was just trying to get the feeling back. I’m OK, though.”

After watching Gilgeous-Alexander clearly in discomfort after the play, the Thunder training staff looked at his left hand during the following timeout.

Gilgeous-Alexander isn’t expected to miss any time due to the injury, which appeared to be a hyperextended finger in Game 2’s win against the Suns.

Thunder All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander sounded off on Dillon Brooks, addressing the back-and-forth on the floor, before responding to Brooks’ postgame remarks after Game 2. Gilgeous-Alexander says it was nothing more than two guards competing in the NBA playoffs, reminding reporters it’s not up to him to control narratives surrounding his foul-baiting reputation.

“He was just doing his usual antics. Then, I scored on him. I let him hear it a little bit,” Gilgeous-Alexander said, before responding to Brooks’ postgame comments, which accused SGA of “flailing” and flopping. “I can’t control what Dillon or anybody else, on the other side, is gonna complain about. All I can do is try to go out there and win basketball games for my team. I mean, Dillon’s doing what he’s supposed to do. He’s supposed to bring energy to the game.

Rile up the game. Once again, he did a great job of bringing energy to the game tonight. Super fun out there, and I love playing against him.”

Gilgeous-Alexander and Brooks are teammates for the Canadian senior men’s national basketball team.
