‘This is ridiculous’ – Late Liverpool winner should’ve been disallowed, rages talkSPORT pundit

Liverpool’s stoppage time winner against Nottingham Forest should not have stood, according to talkSPORT’s Micky Gray.

Alexis Mac Allister, who had an earlier goal ruled out for handball, was on hand to smash the ball in from close range late on in their 1-0 win.

Liverpool fans were made to wait by VAR as they assessed whether or not Virgil van Dijk was offside during the build-up.

However, the goal was allowed to stand, even though he appeared to be beyond the last defender.

The semi-automated offside technology images later released showed that a Nottingham Forest player’s toe was playing Van Dijk onside.

Recalling the goal on commentary for talkSPORT, Gray said: “There are two Liverpool players in an offside position.

“If they make contact with this first header into the area I think this could be offside, I really do.

“Mac Allister popped the ball into the back of the net. He’s unmarked.

“But as that ball comes out, whether it’s the second phase or not, I still think Van Dijk is in an offside position when he heads this ball back across the six-yard area.”

When the goal was allowed to stand, he added: “He’s given the goal. That’s incredible.

“We’ve seen the still in front of us now and we can see Virgil van Dijk is in an offside position from the still that we’ve seen.

“How can he then head that ball across the area? From the angle I could see, he looked as if he was about a foot offside.

“He’s in an offside position. I’ve seen exactly the same lines as you have, guys. He’s in an offside position.

“The full-time whistle has gone, but this is ridiculous.”

Liverpool leave it late at Forest… again

For the second consecutive season, Liverpool waited until the final moments of the match to beat Forest at the City Ground.

Darwin Nunez was the hero in January 2025 en route to their Premier League title win.

And this time, it’s Mac Allister who was there when it mattered.

Liverpool remain sixth with the win, but it has put them level on 45 points with Chelsea and Manchester United.

It was their third league victory across the past five fixtures.
