The message Avalanche coach Jared Bednar shared that sparked Game 5 comeback vs. Wild

The Colorado Avalanche completed a massive comeback against the Minnesota Wild in Game 5 of their Stanley Cup Playoffs series. The team was down 3-0 in the game and forced overtime, where Brett Kulak won the game for the Avalanche.

As the team was down early, Jared Bednar spoke with his club about what needed to change heading into the second period, but he is not giving many details, according to Tracey Myers of NHL.com.

“I’m not going to tell you what it was, but it wasn’t anything crazy,”  Bednar said. “Again, just trying to give them a message that sort of simplifies where it starts for us. What’s the starting point here, because we were losing all over the ice, in every aspect. So just trying to break it down. Where do we start? What do we have to concentrate on first? What’s next? Then give them a third thing and just do that. We’ll start to gain a little momentum.”

Bednar did make one move, pulling Mackenzie Blackwood from the game and putting Scott Wedgewood in the net.

“When it comes to the goalie switch, a regular-season game, I would’ve left Blackwood in there because he was no different than the rest of our team. Like, we just weren’t good enough. But you’re looking for a spark,” Bednar added.

The Avs coach may have felt the team needed the switch, but the entire team was struggling. Blackwood faced 13 shots in the first period, allowing three goals. Meanwhile, Wedgewood faced just seven shots in two periods plus overtime. The change may have provided enough of a spark, though.

The Avalanche scored in the second period and then twice in the final four minutes of the third period, including a goal from Nathan MacKinnon with just 1:23 left in the game.

Now, the Avalanche await the winner of the Vegas Golden Knights and Anaheim Ducks series in the Western Conference Finals.
