The Giants’ knucklehead circus is the NFL’s most fascinating powderkeg

I’m bullish on the future of the New York Giants. Not only did the team absolutely nail the 2026 NFL Draft by landing Arvell Reese and Francis Mauigoa in the first round, but hiring John Harbaugh gives them a much-needed steadying force behind the wheel — factor in Malik Nabers, Brian Burns, Jevon Holland, and there’s a lot to like about this team.

As much as there is to love, there are two intentionally absent names who are the most critical elements of a successful campaign in 2026: Jaxson Dart and Cam Skattebo, the frat-boy wild cards capable of either ushering in a new era of success in East Rutherford or tanking everything through their own foolishness. It’s unclear how much their penchant for stupidity is real or played up for the camera, but they are exceedingly good at raising eyebrows.

Skattebo decided the best way to show the world that he’s healthy after breaking his leg last season was backflipping, then awkwardly collapsing to the ground in a way that was part fall, and part looked like his leg gave out. When asked about the moment, it provided an opportunity for Skattebo to explain, or to acknowledge that maybe it wasn’t the smartest move — but instead he took the third option.

“I’m just gonna keep being me … if they wanna say I’m braindead, then who cares f*** it.”

The issue is that for Skattebo “being me” runs counter to what the Giants are trying to achieve. The only goal for teams over the summer is getting players into training camp healthy, ensuring they have every opportunity to compete out of the gate. Attempting a backflip on a recently healed leg is a choice, but running backs are a different breed. Surely things are different when it comes to the signal caller, the team leader, the quarterback — right?

Nothing like a quarterback with a history of head injuries diving off a yacht into water of an unspecified depth to instill confidence in his decision-making process. Everything was fine, and in the scheme of things jumping off a yacht is pretty benign, but it’s the perception of acts like the Skattebo backflip or Dart jump which give the impression that these guys aren’t approaching the 2026 season with the seriousness it requires.

This is the first season in a decade where the Giants feel like legitimate threats to make waves in the NFC East. It’s a tough division, but one where anyone can win if things go the right way. There’s nothing specifically about the Cowboys or Commanders that gives them an appreciable edge over New York, and with Philadelphia the team is going through a small roster shift that could be exploited if they don’t meet their lofty potential in 2026.

It’s precisely why John Harbaugh was the right man for the job at this time. Truthfully, I don’t know if he’s an especially long-term option at head coach because at times, he’s felt a little intractable to moving with the times in the NFL — but the man knows how to run a professional football organization. He understands the moving parts that need to come together, and, better than anyone, he knows the importance of his quarterback and running back being healthy, given his recent years in Baltimore.

To mesh that approach to football with two guys running on vibes is a powder keg. It’s not just simply that they’re willing to hurt themselves, but this loose approach to football is very difficult to manage. Once freedom and personality run supreme, it can be very difficult to pull that all in, and let it fester too long as a team can pull itself apart as everyone is looking out for No. 1 over everything else.

There is no middle ground for the 2026 New York Giants. They are either going to surprise us with brilliance or find a way to be the funniest clown show in the NFL. Which way that falls in on Jaxon Dart and Cam Skattebo.
