The final tally is in on Jalen Duren’s historic playoff scoring dip for Pistons
When the Detroit Pistons organization is able to fully process Sunday’s season-ending 125-94 home loss versus the Cleveland Cavaliers, it will be forced to acknowledge another potentially unpleasant situation: Jalen Duren’s looming restricted free agency.
The All-Star center is eligible to sign a five-year, $240 million contract extension this summer, but reaching an optimal resolution could be much more complicated following his underwhelming performance in the 2026 NBA playoffs.
Detroit collectively failed to vanquish Cleveland in the Eastern Conference Semifinals — franchise cornerstone Cade Cunningham shot below 40 percent from the field in the series and much of the supporting cast was invisible for large stretches of time — but Duren will inevitably draw the most criticism. A recent social media post better contextualizes the young big man’s playoff plunge.
“Jalen Duren averaged 9.3 fewer points in the playoffs than he did in the regular season, the biggest drop off in an All-Star season since Elgin Baylor in 1969,” Keerthika Uthayakumar posted on X after the Pistons’ brutal blowout loss in Little Caesars Arena.
The No. 13 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft registered 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds while shooting 51.4 percent in 14 playoff games against the Cavs and Orlando Magic. After averaging a double-double across 70 regular season matchups, Duren endured a massive fall-off.
In addition to his struggles, he was also subjected to taunting from WNBA star and rumored ex Angel Reese. Needless to say, it has been a rough spring for the Pennsylvania native.
Given Detroit’s glaring lack of firepower, Duren came in as one of the biggest X-factors in the entire postseason. While it is unfair for a 22-year-old to carry such a heavy burden, the Pistons needed more from him. Fortunately, he has plenty of time to change the narrative. Jarrett Allen, one of the players who gave Duren trouble in the playoffs, is living proof that redemption is attainable after stumbling under the bright lights.
Jalen Duren will try to grow from this humbling experience, just as Allen has done with the Cavaliers. Unfortunately, the Pistons do not have as much time to work through their conflict. Management must quickly figure out how to maximize the squad’s abundant promise while it still has the financial flexibility do so.
