Sun’s Brittney Griner shares emotional reaction to breaking WNBA blocks record

Brittney Griner and the Connecticut Sun finally snapped their seven-game losing streak after blowing out the Chicago Sky, 92-63, at Mohegan Sun Arena on Monday.

The Sun improved to 3-11, while the Sky suffered their sixth straight loss and fell to 4-12.

The victory was also extra special for Griner, as she became the WNBA’s all-time leader in blocks with 878 swats and counting, surpassing Margo Dydek, who had held the record since 2008.

The 35-year-old Griner finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and four blocks. She appeared to be emotional in the postgame conference when asked about her latest feat.

“Having my family here is big for me. Everything I do, I do for them. So, for them to see that (was special), sitting there at courtside, my wife is amazing. I have a lot of emotions right now,” said Griner in the video posted by The IX Sports’ Deyscha Smith.

“But also, getting the win here, we wanted to put on a good show for these fans, and I hope they know that we are working hard every single day. I said it the other day, we are working so hard.”

Griner signed a one-year contract with the Sun in the offseason after her one-year stop with the Atlanta Dream. Connecticut, however, has struggled, even with the two-time Defensive Player of the Year patrolling the paint. They are giving up 89.8 points per outing, which is third-worst in the league.

Still, Griner is having a productive campaign compared to her meager numbers last season. She is averaging 12.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.9 blocks. She is the league’s third-best shot-blocker, trailing only A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces and Emily Engstler of the Portland Fire.

The Sun will host the Washington Mystics on Friday.
