Sunny Mehta drops ‘dream job’ truth bomb on Devils’ general manager role
Seemingly out of nowhere, new New Jersey Devils general manager Sunny Mehta emerged as an intriguing candidate across the NHL. Mehta had worked in the Florida Panthers organization for both of their back-to-back Stanley Cups, making him a hot commodity. The analytically driven executive was the brains behind Bill Zito’s operation in Sunrise.
With Zito not looking to step down from his role, Mehta began to explore other options. The New Jersey native grew up a big Devils fan, as he showed on social media earlier this week, which made getting this job even sweeter, according to Amanda Stein via X, formerly Twitter.
“I have been you for 40 years. It’s really not an exaggeration when I tell you this is my dream job,” Mehta told Devils fans via Stein.
It isn’t the first time in the Devils’ organization for Mehta, who headed the first Analytics department in the league in 2014. He has also done work for the Phoenix Coyotes, Washington Capitals, and six Major League Baseball teams. Sunny Mehta has been with the Panthers since 2020 as vice president of hockey strategy and intelligence, and became assistant general manager and Head of Analytics in 2023, when the Panthers’ dynasty began.
The Devils and the Toronto Maple Leafs were two teams chasing the analytical whiz. However, in the end, the allure of working for his favorite team in the city he grew up in outweighed the prospect of working in hockey’s mecca in Toronto. The allure of all-you-can-eat Taylor ham, egg, and cheese sandwiches also didn’t hurt New Jersey’s case.
