Rocket Classic betting tips: Three longshot picks for this week on the PGA Tour

Just two tournaments remain of the PGA Tour regular season starting with this week’s Rocket Classic, which takes place at Detroit Golf Club for the eighth and final time.

For some, this week represents one of the last remaining chances to lock up a place in the FedEx Cup playoffs next month, while for others, like world No.3 Cameron Young, this is an opportunity to stay sharp for the more valuable tournaments to come.

Designed by renowned architect Donald Ross, Detroit GC has held all seven previous editions of this tournament although there is a slight change to the venue this year, with the total par reduced from 72 to 70, presumably in a bid to keep scoring in check.

Regardless of the par of the course, this is an easy layout for PGA Tour professionals and attacking powerhouses carrying a hot putter tend to be the ones to concentrate on.

Clark can step up a gear in Motor City

Bookmakers make Cameron Young the most likely winner, but Wyndham Clark is certainly capable of putting it up to the highest-ranked golfer in the Rocket Classic field and there could be more silverware to come for the US Open champion this week.

Clark missed the cut at the Open Championship last time out, but his last four appearances in the US have resulted in a win at the Byron Nelson, third place at the Memorial Tournament, that glorious US Open triumph at Shinnecock Hills, and fifth place in the Travelers Championship.

It has been a remarkable turnaround for Clark, who failed to make the weekend in last year’s Rocket Classic but had finished 17th and eighth in two previous appearances in the event – on each occasion when ranked outside the world’s top 200.

While the 32-year-old appreciates the grind of a US Open, he won the Byron Nelson at 30 under par and will have no problem shooting the sort of ultra-low total this tournament usually demands.

Improving Gerard taking aim at another win

Ryan Gerard’s sole PGA Tour victory came in the 2025 Barracuda Championship and the 26-year-old has taken his game up a level this season, suggesting that a second triumph is not far away.

Gerard has always been a superb ball-striker, but major improvement with the putter – he has jumped 132 places in the Tour’s strokes-gained putting rankings – has helped him reach the next level.

He now boasts one of the best all-round games on the circuit, finishing tenth at the Charles Schwab Challenge, runner-up at the Memorial and ninth at the Open Championship in his last six starts.

Time for Thompson to shine once again

Course form counts for plenty and, in the case of Davis Thompson, that can be extended to form on Donald Ross designs.

Thompson was a runner-up in the 2024 Rocket Classic, he finished ninth at the US Open on Ross’ Pinehurst No.2, and his last three visits to Sedgefield Country Club, home of the Wyndham Championship, have yielded form figures of 22-12-11.

The Georgia man needs a big week if he’s to make the FedEx Cup playoffs and he could be capable of producing when he needs to, having finished seventh in last week’s 3M Open, where he struck the ball superbly.
