Harry Brook‘s side lost the opener in Colombo, but thanks to a stunning Joe Root performance in the second match, they have levelled the series with one to play.

The 34-year-old starred with bat and ball as England chased down 219 with just under four overs to spare.

Root also claimed two wickets as spin dominated the contest, with Adil Rashid, Will Jacks, Liam Dawson and Rehan Ahmed all taking wickets for England.

Then with the bat, he scored 75 to hold the England innings together.

Jos Buttler and Jacks saw them over the line, and England now have a chance to win the series.

Sri Lanka vs England: What has been said?

Despite the win, Brook was furious with the pitch in Colombo.

Speaking after the contest, he said: “It was nice to get a win away from home, on a tough surface. It was probably the worst pitch I have ever played on.

“You had to go out there and adapt as quick as possible, just try to get off strike and get the other batter on strike.

“Joe Root’s ability to get off strike and put the bad ball away when they slightly miss is awesome. He’s a phenomenal player to have in our side.

“I thought the bowlers did an amazing job to bowl Sri Lanka out, a side used to these conditions. It was about us rotating our spinners.”
