Spurs’ Stephon Castle turns heads with eye-opening take on Thunder series

The last time the San Antonio Spurs went to the NBA Finals, Stephon Castle was only nine years old. The Spurs won the championship after dominating the Miami Heat, 4-1.

Today, the battle may not be as one-sided for the Spurs in the Western Conference Finals, but they have a strong chance to return to the ultimate round for the first time in over a decade, with Castle being a key part of the inspired journey.

San Antonio forced a Game 7 against the Oklahoma City Thunder after a convincing win, 118-91, in Game 6 at Frost Bank Center on Thursday.

The 21-year-old Castle had 17 points, five rebounds, and nine assists to provide ample support for Victor Wembanyama, who logged 28 points, 10 rebounds, two steals, and three blocks.

Castle did not hesitate to drop a confident remark about the Spurs after the game.

“As a group, we all want this. It’s right there in front of us, and we feel like collectively that we’re better than this team,” said the athletic guard in the postgame interview.

“We didn’t want to let our fans down on our home court either. Coming out here with a chance to go back in OKC and play a Game 7 was all the motivation we needed.”

The former Rookie of the Year also helped put the clamps on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who only scored 15 points on 6-of-18 shooting. Gilgeous-Alexander only had three free throws.

Castle’s strong comment drew clashing reactions on X.

“Correct mindset,” said @teepeefive.

“BACK IT UP, KING. YOU’RE A CHAMPION,” wrote @PRJbets.

“He’s not lying,” commented @HiimDuncan

“Crying last game about the referees, mind you,” posted @CollinMBoyles.

“They ain’t won s***, and they’re better than the Thunder? This is laughable. Beat ’em first before you start talking bulletin board material,” added @DaddyDe13.

The Spurs leaned on a 20-0 run in the third quarter to take the fight out of the defending champions. Even Thunder coach Mark Daigneault admitted that they blew their chance to finish off San Antonio.

Game 7 returns to Paycom Center on Saturday.
