Spurs’ Mitch Johnson calls out ‘questionable’ decisions that hurt team in Game 1
With Victor Wembanyama starting things slow in the San Antonio Spurs’ Game 1 showdown against the New York Knicks, Mitch Johnson tried to supercharge the offense with a steady helping of 3-point shots in the first half.
The problem? Not many of their attempts went in, with San Antonio closing out the game with just 11 makes on 43 attempts over the course of the contest.
Asked about the Spurs’ decision to let the ball fly early and often against the Knicks, Mitch Johnson noted that San Antonio may need to adjust their diets in Game 2 and beyond, as things got downright ‘egregious‘ in the second quarter.
“Yeah, I mean, I don’t have any right now that I felt were egregious. There was definitely a stretch there in the second quarter I know where, you know, we want to play with pace and we want to hunt threes and transition, but we also want those to be in rhythm and feel like they’re our shot. There might have been some questionable ones. I’ll have to go back and look at the film. But again, it gets tough when you get nitpicky with that stuff. We’ll have to go back and look,” Johnson noted.
“But we definitely, again, didn’t have enough pressure on the paint all night, whether that was in transition or in the half-court. We’ve got to make sure we’re still putting force in the paint. And we’ll still get our threes up with that, but we can’t work outside in. We’ve got to go more inside out for sure.”
While the Spurs weren’t exactly an elite 3-point shooting team during the regular season, ranking 15th overall at 35.9 percent, few teams are going to pull out a win in the NBA Finals with their deep ball falling in the mid-20s. Fortunately, the Knicks only shot 31 against the Spurs in Game 1, so if Johnson gets his team back on track, they have a chance to do some damage in Game 2.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson, on the 3-point selection: “We want to hunt threes in transition, but we also want those to be in rhythm and feel like they're our shot. There might have been some questionable ones. … We can't work outside in. We've got to go more inside out.” pic.twitter.com/Y3sSqNv3Il
