Shohei Ohtani ties all-time Dodgers streak with improbable hit vs. Giants

Shohei Ohtani keeps his incredible streak alive.

With his single in the seventh inning of Tuesday night’s game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park in San Francisco, Ohtani extended his on-base streak to 53 games. That ties the Los Angeles Dodgers record with Shawn Green, per Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times.

The all-time franchise record is 58 straight games, done by Duke Snider of the Brooklyn Dodgers during the 1954 season.

Ohtani had quite a battle with San Francisco left-handed reliever Erik Miller in that at-bat. He got in front after three straight balls before picking up strikes in the next two pitches. He got to first base after making contact on Miller’s sixth pitch, a 99 mph four-seamer.

Here’s how it played out:

Before that single, Ohtanio strick out swinging in the first and third innings. The reigning National League Most Valuable Player flied out in the fifth inning before finally getting on base during his matchup against Miller.

The 31-year-old Ohtani is undeniably a fearsome hitter to face for opposing pitchers, and it’s not just because of his power. Shohei Ohtani, who has also passed Babe Ruth during his ongoing streak, entered the Giants game with a 15.5 percent walk rate, 22nd overall in the big leagues. His 22.3 percent strikeout rate is not elite, but he also has a .309 batting average in balls in play.

Assuming Ohtani sees action at the plate in each of the next five Dodgers games, he can tie Snider’s record in April. 26 against the Chicago Cubs in a series finale at Dodger Stadium.
