Shedeur Sanders put on notice as ‘Brock Purdy clone’ begs Browns to select him in NFL Draft

Ty Simpson is predicted to be the second quarterback taken in the NFL Draft with Fernando Mendoza set to join the Las Vegas Raiders.

Exactly where he comes off the board is up for debate, but given the scarcity of top-level passers, position value could see a team with a pick in the 20s take a chance.

After all, it worked for the New York Giants with Jaxson Dart (25th overall in 2025).

Simpson showed plenty of promise at Alabama, and while not considered a slam-dunk prospect, has enough tools to be worth a shot.

San Francisco 49ers star Brock Purdy is the most common pro comp for the pocket passer, who threw for 3,567 yards and 28 touchdowns against just five interceptions.

“Simpson, like Purdy, stands 6-foot-2 and weighs around 220 pounds. Both QBs are rhythm-based pocket passers with sneaky mobility that helps them extend plays when things break down outside of structure,” wrote Bama Hammer’s Trevion Ware of the former Crimson Tide star.

“No, Purdy isn’t a speed demon, but with his NFL Combine 40-yard dash clocking mid-4.7 seconds, he’s shown in the league that defenses must still account for his functional athleticism, much like Simpson did at Alabama last fall on later downs.

“Simpson, like Purdy, wins more through timing, accuracy, and structured progression reads rather than elite velocity.

“Both of their upsides are tied to footwork consistency, offensive environment, and proper development from their play callers.”

Ty Simpson wants to play for Cleveland Browns and Todd Monken

With just one season as a starter, Simpson’s success will depend on landing the right head coach to help continue his development.

He has one in mind, and it would mean Shedeur Sanders facing another intense battle for the Cleveland Browns jersey he won last season.

The Browns own both the sixth and 24th selections — the latter of which might be the perfect slot to swoop for a QB.

Kay Adams asked the prospect if he would like to head for Cleveland.

“I think it would be great,” he replied, before boldly making a suggestion for the No. 6 pick.

“If I’m able to get there with Carnell [Tate], it would be great; we’re always on the same page, and hopefully take the league by storm,” he added.

Tate is widely considered the best WR prospect in the class, and a relatively sluggish 40 time might just see him slip into the Browns’ hands in the top 10.

Monken earned plenty of fans for his work as Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator, and Simpson is one of them.

“He’s the man,” he added. “First off, he recruited me at Georgia, so I had a great relationship with him. Then, him coaching at Southern Miss, he and my dad got to know each other pretty well, so I’ve known him for a long time.

Simpson has met with the Browns, and revealed how Monken is hoping to shape his offense.

“I got to meet with them at the combine, and I got to meet with them on (a visit with the Browns),” he told Adams. “He wants to take the league by storm with his offense.

He’s very genuine and cares about his players and his coaches. The proof is in the pudding when it comes to the offense. You saw what he did at Georgia and what he did with Lamar Jackson.

I think it’s a quarterback-friendly system led by a guy who is willing to change and adapt.”

Sanders will be watching April’s draft with plenty on the line.

Seeing Tate bolster his receiving room would be a huge boost, but another quarterback joining Dillon Gabriel and Deshaun Watson in a crowded room is a nightmare scenario for a man who has already endured one four-man battle as a pro.
