Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Dillon Brooks make Canadian history in heated Game 2
On Wednesday, the defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder went up 2-0 in the first round playoff series against the Phoenix Suns, 120-107. In the process, things got heated between Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dillon Brooks.
The spark was when SGA pointed and laughed at Brooks after converting on a mid-range jumper with under five minutes left in the first half. Nevertheless, both etched their place in NBA history for Canadian players, per Keerthika Uthayakumar.
They both became the first Canadian NBA players to score 30+ points in a Playoff game. Altogether, SGA finished with a game-high 37 points, and Brooks had 30 points. SGA went 13-for-25 from the field and dished out nine assists. Plus, he was a perfect 9-for-9 at the free-throw line.
Meanwhile, Brooks went 12-for-23 from the field and grabbed six rebounds.
SGA is a native of Toronto, and Brooks is from Mississauga. Last year, SGA was recognized as the NBA MVP and was the NBA Finals MVP.
This year, SGA is once again a heavy favorite to win the MVP. He averaged 31.1 points and 6.6 assists per game. On Wednesday, SGA won the 2025-26 NBA Clutch Player of the Year for 175 clutch points and 52 clutch field goals.
In the process, the Thunder achieved the best record in the NBA at 64-18.
Conversely, Brooks finished the season with a career-high average of 20.2 points per game. Additionally, he shot a career high 43.5% from the field and averaged 3.6 rebounds per game. The Suns finished at 45-37 and secured the 8th spot in the Western Conference Playoffs after defeating the Golden State Warriors in the Play-In tournament.
