Serena Williams gives look deep inside her brain amid Wimbledon singles debate

Serena Williams is back at Wimbledon at the age of 44. She had been set in her retirement, but there was a small voice in the back of her head that still wanted to compete in her chosen sport. Williams had managed to ignore that voice for a few years since her decision to leave competitive tennis in 2022, but it never went away.

When an opportunity came her way in the form of an invitation from the All-England Tennis Club this year, Williams decided to take advantage of that opportunity.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion had debated the subject of playing within her mind but finally decided to play in the sport’s most prestigious tournament.

“People live to be an athlete,” Williams said in her press conference at Wimbledon, per ESPN.com. “I have this great opportunity to showcase what I do, what I do best, I suppose. Yeah, I think ultimately I was like that is pretty cool, so I should do it.”

Williams is competing at Wimbledon for the first time since 2022. Williams was eliminated in the first round in her appearance in the tournament four years ago.

She will face Maya Joint of Australia Tuesday night in her opening match. She has won the Wimbledon title seven times in her career, but her expectations are not close to what they were during the prime of her career.

Williams has a career record of 19-2 in the first round at Wimbledon. The losses came in her last two appearances at the All-England Tennis Club.
