Rudy Gobert’s hilarious exchange with reporter about Timberwolves’ size
With the injury to Donte DiVincenzo and a few pieces of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ backcourt, they have had to adjust on the fly. Included in those adjustments from head coach Chris Finch has been an increased reliance on a big lineup consisting of Rudy Gobert, Julius Randle, and Naz Reid on the frontcourt. In Game 4 of the Timberwolves’ semifinal clash against the San Antonio Spurs, going back to that trio paid off big time, as they came through in crunch time on their way to a 114-109 victory to even up the series at 2-2.
With Victor Wembanyama having to exit early after being guilty of a flagrant foul penalty two in the second quarter, the Timberwolves had carte blanche in the paint in crunch time — especially after the Spurs went small with Julian Champagnie at the five and Devin Vassell at the four, with De’Aaron Fox, Dylan Harper, and Stephon Castle being the other three.
After the game, Gobert pointed out that the Timberwolves’ size swung Game 4 in their favor in hilarious fashion, even eliciting a response from Reid in the process.
“I shouldn’t laugh but I think size matters,” Gobert told reporters, via Pierre Noujaim of FOX 9 Minnesota.
“Woah,” Reid could be overheard saying on the other side of the room.
“I’m sorry, but it’s true,” Gobert added. “Size matters.”
“Size matters.”

In the clutch, the Timberwolves scored five layups (two from Reid and one each from Gobert, Anthony Edwards, and Ayo Dosunmu) and Gobert threw down a dunk as well. Gobert and Dosunmu converted and-one layups, and they both made their free throws. At the 4:48 mark, the Timberwolves were down by one, 99-98. After 4:08 of game time, they were up by seven, 112-105.
During that stretch, the Timberwolves controlled the boards and the paint, and they ended up winning the game. It might have a double meaning attached to it, but for this night, size did indeed matter for Minnesota.
