Rory McIlroy’s disastrous Masters double bogey gives Cam Young 2-shot lead

Before the 2026 Masters, Jack Nicklaus told Rory McIlroy, “No f’n double bogeys.” After four doubles on his way to his first Green Jacket, McIlroy heeded the advice in the first two rounds. But McIlroy made a double bogey on the par-three 4th hole on Sunday, giving Cam Young a two-shot lead.

McIlroy hit his tee shot left but hit a brilliant chip over the bunker to give himself a chance at par. From ten feet, he barely missed the putt, leaving him two feet for a bogey. But that two-footer lipped out, giving McIlroy a five at the tough fourth hole.

Young, on the other hand, hit his drive to the front of the green, but it trickled off the front. He chipped up to six feet and drilled the par putt, staying at 12 under par.

This is nothing new for McIlroy, although he has less wiggle room than he did a year ago. He made two double bogeys in the final round, on 1 and 13, but had a three-shot lead entering the day. McIlroy and Young were tied at the start of Sunday’s round, so the double bogey will hurt even more this year.

McIlroy was the first Masters champion to make four double bogeys on their way to the winner’s circle. He has only made two this week, but they have cost him his spot at the top of the leaderboard. This year, he became the first player to take a six-shot lead after 36 holes. Only one of the six men who had five-shot leads did not go on to win.

Both McIlroy and Young made pars on the 5th hole, giving McIlroy another par-three chance on 6. But he blew that tee shot well over the green, causing even more strife.
