Reiss Nelson lands new club days after Arsenal contract terminated

Reiss Nelson is set to sign for Feyenoord less than a week after his Arsenal contract was terminated.

The 26-year-old winger officially left the Gunners after 18 years at the club on August 27, becoming a free agent.

Nelson had been part of the Premier League champions’ set-up since the age of eight, spending nine years in the first team squad.

But he struggled to ever break into the regular starting line-up over the years, being sent out on loan four times – most recently to Brentford – before his contract was ripped up a year early.

One of those loans was to Feyenoord in 2021/22, where he scored four goals and provided seven assists in 32 games.

And now the Dutch side, managed by ex-Arsenal player Giovanni van Bronckhorst, have returned to sign him again.

Nelson completes Feyenoord medical

Just days after he officially left the Emirates for good, Feyenoord have swooped in to bring Nelson back to the club.

Dutch outlet 1908.nl released images of Nelson arriving in Rotterdam, Netherlands to complete his free transfer.

He has agreed terms and completed a medical ahead of the move, which will see him play in the Eredivisie again.

Feyenoord are hoping to make the switch official by midnight on Wednesday to register the forward for the Champions League.

If they miss the deadline, Nelson would not be able to feature in any of their European fixtures this season.

The Dutch giants qualified for the Champions League last season after finishing second in the league behind PSV.

Nelson’s next chapter

Nelson will hope to play more regular minutes this season after making the permanent move to Feyenoord.

He only played 14 times last term for Brentford on loan, in a campaign that was impacted by poor fitness.

The ex-England youth international featured 10 times in the Premier League for the Bees, not starting a single game.

Before that, he spent a year at Fulham on loan too, but a hamstring injury ruled him out for five months and he played just 11 games, scoring one goal and assisting another.

Nelson’s first spell at Feyenoord came in 2021 and with 11 goal contributions during his spell, he impressed.

It was the same at his loan with German side Hoffenheim, where he scored seven goals in 29 matches.

He will hope to find some of that old form and consistent minutes now that he has officially left Arsenal.

For the Gunners, Nelson played 90 games across nine years, scoring just eight goals and providing nine assists.
