It was 1-0 to the home side at the time, with Sunderland getting back level moments after the incident.

A statement from the Premier League Match Centre read: “Today’s match between Newcastle United and Sunderland was temporarily paused during the second half after a report of discriminatory abuse from the crowd, directed at Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida.

“This is in line with the Premier League’s on-field anti-discrimination protocol. The incident at St James’ Park will now be fully investigated.

“We offer our full support to the player and both clubs. Racism has no place in our game, or anywhere in society.

“We will continue to work with stakeholders and authorities to ensure our stadiums are an inclusive and welcoming environment for all.”

Speaking on talkSPORT during live commentary of the match, Sunderland legend Micky Gray said: “It’s the last thing that we want. We just want to see a great game of football. He obviously looked a little bit upset but I hope he’s okay.”

Derby day glory

Anthony Gordon had put Newcastle ahead early on with a goal inside 10 minutes at St James’ Park.

The Magpies were well on top, but failed to get that crucial second goal that would have given them a comfortable cushion.

Chemsdine Talbi struck back for Sunderland in the 57th minute and the visitors pushed for a winner from there.

Brian Brobbey then appeared to steal all three points for Sunderland with a goal in the final minute to make it 2-1.

Boos rang out from the home supporters as they flooded out of St James’ Park.

Newcastle move above Sunderland up to 11th in the Premier League table.

Earlier in the day, Newcastle and Sunderland fans had clashed outside St James’ Park in ugly scenes.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “We are aware of a number of videos circulating on social media in relation to Newcastle United and Sunderland supporters goading one another.

“In the main, everyone has co-operated and we are able to report that one arrest was made ahead of kick-off.

“We will continue to have an increased police presence in the city centre.”
