Quentin Grimes’ ‘no-brainer’ reaction to Luka Doncic reunion
The Los Angeles Lakers lost their starting backcourt for Game 1 of their opening round playoff series against the Houston Rockets as both Marcus Smart and Luke Kennard signed elsewhere via free agency. The starting guards this season are obviously going to be Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, but the Lakers still needed to replace their guard depth, with Quentin Grimes figuring to help in that regard.
Quentin Grimes was one of the Lakers’ early free agent acquisitions this offseason in a spending spree that included the sign-and-trade for Walker Kessler, Collin Sexton and Sandro Mamukelashvili. Each player was officially signed in the days leading up to NBA Summer League, and then participated in small media sessions during which Grimes acknowledged his excitement to play alongside Doncic again, as per Lakers Nation.
“That’s guy for sure,” Grimes said. “It’s gonna be a lot of fun playing with him.”
Grimes also called the decision to sign with the Lakers a ‘no-brainer,’ and that Doncic was the first to text him after he agreed to join the purple and gold.
Grimes and Doncic were teammates for about half a season with the Dallas Mavericks in 2024-25. Both of them were jettisoned right around the trade deadline. While the Mavericks took plenty of fire for the Doncic trade, the Grimes trade with the Philadelphia 76ers was just as worthy of criticism.
The Mavericks received Caleb Martin in return. Martin failed to make a significant impact with Dallas while Grimes emerged as a dependable wing scorer with the 76ers.
This past season, he appeared in 75 games, including 19 starts, at a little over 29 minutes per game. He averaged 13.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists with splits of 45 percent shooting from the field, 33.4 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 84 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
The No. 25 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Grimes is entering his sixth season in the league. He began his career with the New York Knicks and has also played for the Detroit Pistons, in addition to the Mavericks and 76ers.
