Pistons guard Chaz Lanier showcases sharpshooter potential with monster Summer League game

Chaz Lanier turned in an impressive performance Monday despite the Detroit Pistons’ 86-75 NBA Summer League loss to the New York Knicks at Cox Pavilion.

Lanier dropped a game-high 24 points while showcasing the shooting range that could strengthen his case for a larger role in Detroit’s rotation. He went 8-for-13 from the field, with every make coming from beyond the arc, and finished 8-for-12 on 3-pointers after missing his final two attempts.

The breakout from the second-year guard followed a 25-point performance one day earlier, when he knocked down seven of 12 3-pointers in the Piston’s 103-94 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. After opening Summer League just 1-for-6 from beyond the arc, he responded by sinking 15 triples over his next two games.

During the third quarter, the NBA took to its official X, formerly Twitter, drawing attention to Lanier’s hot shooting.

The 24-year-old’s final percentage fell to 66.7 after two late misses, but his overall production in Las Vegas remains impressive. Through three games, Lanier has made 16 of 30 attempts from beyond the arc while averaging 20.3 points, generating offense through movement, spot-up opportunities, and transition chances.

The Pistons selected Lanier with the 37th pick in the 2025 NBA Draft after he won the Jerry West Award at the University of Tennessee. He averaged 2.4 points in 34 rookie appearances and spent time with the Motor City Cruise, averaging 16.9 points in the G League and scoring 40 in his debut.

Summer League shooting alone will not guarantee rotation minutes. Still, the former Tennessee standout is demonstrating a skill that could distinguish him from Detroit’s other guards. If his accuracy carries into training camp, the Pistons may have found a reliable bench shooter within the organization.
