Phillies’ Bryce Harper breathes a sigh of relief after Zack Gelof nearly robs HR

Philadelphia Phillies superstar Bryce Harper hit a pair of home runs in Tuesday’s 9-1 win over the Athletics. However, his second was almost taken away.

After Harper smashed a deep shot to center field, Athletics outfielder Zack Gelof leapt up to make the grab. Once he came down, it was unclear if he made the catch. But once Gelof revealed his glove, Harper made his full trip around the bases.

Harper’s first home run, of the solo variety, opened up the scoring in the third inning. Both teams then remained scoreless until the seventh inning, when the Phillies went on a five-run onslaught. Harper’s second homer capped off a three-run eighth and put the final nail in the coffin.

Philadelphia has now won three-straight games, moving to 16-20 on the season. They still have a long way to go towards fully turning things around, but the Phillies now have momentum.

If the franchise is going to march into the playoffs, they’ll be relying on Harper. After his two-home run game, he now has nine on the season. Furthermore, Harper has hit .286 with with 23 RBIs and a pair of stolen bases. He may not have two home runs every night, but Philadelphia needs him to have an impactful at-bat more often than not.

Heading into their series against the Athletics, the Phillies swept the Giants before taking three of four from the Marlins. They may not be at the top of the league how they envisioned, but Philadelphia has shown plenty of life. The franchise will look for Harper to continue being one of their main sparkplugs amid what they hope is a successful turnaround.
