Phil Mickelson withdraws, Max Homa enters PGA Championship field
With the PGA Championship approaching next week, a change to the field will see Phil Mickelson missing his second consecutive major tournament, while Max Homa will take his spot. Homa had a great showing at the Masters, finishing in a tie for ninth at eight under par, just four shots behind Rory McIlroy.
It’s an unfortunate situation for Mickelson. He had to withdraw from the Masters because of a family health issue, and he’ll miss the PGA Championship for the same reason, according to Golf Digest via X, formerly Twitter.
“Phil Mickelson has withdrawn from the PGA Championship due to a personal health matter with his family,” Golf Digest reported. “Max Homa will take his place at Aronimink.”
Mickelson hasn’t played since the LIV Golf Stroke Play Championship in Michigan last August. He finished tied for 29th in that tournament, but has yet to make his LIV debut for the 2026 season. With Mickelson a big supporter of the rogue golf league and the controversy around whether LIV’s funding is getting cut, it’s unclear where the legend stands with the league.
Mickelson struggled at last year’s major tournaments, making the cut just once at The Open at Royal Portrush, where he finished tied for 56th. He missed the cut at Quail Hollow at the PGA Championship, finishing +9, and followed that with a +8 at the U.S. Open.
Nevertheless, whatever Mickelson is going through is much bigger than a major golf tournament, and we wish Phil and his family the best as they work through it.
