PGA Tour star stuns commentators with impressive six-pack – but still can’t avoid penalty

Scenes you never thought you’d see on the PGA Tour…

Michael Brennan stripped off his shirt to take a shot right on the edge of the water on Thursday at the Zurich Classic.

Plenty of golfers have taken off some items of clothing when stepping into the course-side water hazards before.

But usually, it would be shoes and socks coming off, with some rolled-up trouser legs to avoid them getting too wet.

Brennan instead took things to a new level, removing his shirt to play a creative shot from the water, as he opted not to take a penalty stroke on the par-5 18th hole at TPC Louisiana in Avondale.

And the 24-year-old, who is playing in the Switzerland tournament with partner Johnny Keefer, stunned commentators with his approach.

As cameras cut to him leaning down a grass verge and preparing to hit his ball from out of the reeds on the edge of the water, one commentator quickly exclaimed: “Oh my gosh!”

Unfortunately for Brennan, though, things didn’t go as planned.

His shot sent the ball up into the air, along with plenty of water, mud and reeds, before plopping back down into them seconds later.

One commentator said ‘And, that wasn’t worth it’, before the other burst into laughter, saying: “That’s awesome.”

Brennan was left with water and mud up his arms as he stooped his head in disappointment at the shot, which saw him have to take a penalty on the hole after all.

At least he was able to show off his impressive physique though, as he gave everyone a look at his six-pack!

Fortunately for Brennan, his playing partner Keefer spared his blushes as he made par for them on the 18th.

The Zurich Classic is a unique tournament, with the first round of play seeing each pair use the best ball from their team.

So, they didn’t have to bother about Brennan’s shot in the end, with Keefer’s impressive effort saving par for the duo.

In the leading pack

They eventually went on to finish their round with a brilliant score of -11, which sees them tied for fourth place.

The pair made four birdies and one eagle on their second nine.

Leading the way heading into Friday looks set to be Alex Smalley and Hayden Springer, who posted a 14-under first round.

Davis Thompson and Austin Eckroat are 13-under after 18 holes, with Sam Stevens and Zach Bauchou sitting one back from them.

Shane Lowry and Brooks Koepka will also be hoping to contend.

Three more days of action are now coming up, and talkSPORT will have regular updates from New Orleans this weekend.
