Padres’ Ron Marinaccio suspended 3 games for intentionally hitting Gunnar Henderson

After San Diego Padres pitcher Ron Marinaccio hit Baltimore Orioles star Gunnar Henderson on Saturday, he was suspended along with manager Craig Stammen, with the claim being that it was intentional. As the Padres and Orioles matchups over the weekend were intense, a ruling has been made on suspensions for Marinaccio and Stammen.

According to Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun, Marinaccio has been suspended for three games, while Stammen will only be out one contest. It all stemmed from a pitch inside to Henderson in the ninth inning of San Diego’s 9-3 win over Baltimore on Saturday, as Marinaccio hit the Orioles slugger and was ejected after with Stammen.

“Padres reliever Ron Marinaccio and San Diego manager Craig Stammen have both been suspended and fined by MLB for intentionally hitting Gunnar Henderson with a pitch on Saturday,” Meyer wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Marinaccio is suspended three games, Stammen suspended one game.”

How Padres’ Ron Marinaccio, Craig Stammen described the hit-by-pitch

There was a lingering question whether the Padres pitcher in Marinaccio threw the pitch intentionally, as Henderson thought so, with the umpire crew and MLB feeling the same due to the ejections and suspensions. However, Marinaccio and Stammen described it as needing to pitch Henderson inside as a strategic move.

“He’s a great hitter. You’ve got to make hitters like that uncomfortable at times, and I pulled a fastball a little bit too much there,” Marinaccio said, via MLB.com. “I could understand the visual, a couple guys pitching inside earlier, but there were no warnings.”

“We need to pitch [Henderson] inside. If he gets extended, he’s going to do what he did yesterday,” Stammen said on the matter. “That’s part of pitching, is to be able to pitch inside. Pitch between the plate and the body, and it hit him. I don’t know why they tossed [Marinaccio]. I guess maybe because Bogaerts got hit. But it’s frustrating that they would make a decision that quick.”

At any rate, Marinaccio and Stammen will serve their suspensions and look to move on as the team is now 34-39.
