Padres’ Fernando Tatis Jr. drops brutally honest admission about walk-off home run vs. Reds

The San Diego Padres pulled off a 5-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday, thanks to an incredible walk-off home run from Fernando Tatis Jr. in the bottom of the ninth. Almost immediately after the victory, Tatis shared his honest reaction to hitting the home run.

While talking with Sammy Levitt of “97.3 The Fan,” a Padres-based radio show, the 27-year-old superstar admitted that he wasn’t entirely sure the ball was going to go over the wall when he hit it. Overall, he was just thrilled to help his team get a big win.

“I didn’t know,” admitted Tatis when asked if he thought he hit a home run. “I came out of the box hard and, thank God, it went over the wall.”

Wednesday’s walk-off was just Fernando Tatis Jr.’s second home run of the 2026 campaign. The power just hasn’t quite been there for whatever reason, but the seven-year veteran has remained productive at the plate regardless. Tatis entered the contest with a .278 batting average and .346 OBP with 69 hits, the lone home run, and 19 RBIs. Perhaps the walk-off will bring the three-time All-Star back to his normal home run-hitting self.

Wednesday’s win was the 35th victory of the campaign. The Padres are in second place in the NL West and are eight games behind the first-placed Los Angeles Dodgers. It’s been a tough stretch lately, as the club is 3-7 in its last 10 games.

Fernando Tatis Jr. and the Padres will have a chance to earn another win on Friday. San Diego is scheduled to play its first matchup of a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles that day, with the contest starting at 7:05 p.m. EST.
