Orioles make bullpen roster move after sweep of Rays
The Baltimore Orioles are bringing back veteran right-hander Albert Suarez shortly after he elected free agency following his recent designation for assignment. According to Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com, Suarez has already returned to Baltimore’s clubhouse, with the team expected to finalize a new major league deal before opening its series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday after sweeping the Tampa Bay Rays.
To create roster space, the Orioles are expected to option right-hander Cameron Weston to Triple-A Norfolk. The move would make Suarez immediately available out of the bullpen.
Baltimore has repeatedly used a roster arrangement with Suarez this season because he is out of minor league options. The Orioles have designated him for assignment multiple times, passed him through waivers unclaimed, and then re-signed him soon after. The setup has effectively allowed Baltimore to shuttle fresh bullpen arms while continuing to keep Suarez in the organization.
The 36-year-old owns a 2.75 ERA across 19 2/3 innings this season, although he has managed just a 12.3% strikeout rate alongside an 11.1% walk rate. His success has also coincided with a .186 batting average on balls in play and a 9.2% home-run-to-fly-ball rate.
Since returning from five seasons overseas, including stints in Japan and South Korea, Suarez has become a dependable depth option for the Orioles. Across 165 innings, over the last three seasons, he has compiled a 3.49 ERA with an 18.6% strikeout rate and a 7.8% walk rate.
Injuries limited Suarez to just 11 2/3 major league innings in 2025, but he has already surpassed that total this season.
