Despite being 11 places and 19 points worse off than their opponents in the Premier League table, Nottingham Forest head into Thursday night’s home first leg in the Europa League semi final as favourites for victory.

Vitor Pereira’s side appear to have hit a purple patch at just the right time in the season. The Portuguese started his tutelage at the City Ground with one win from his opening seven matches, losing four, but head into Thursday night unbeaten in their last eight across all competitions.

Forest have won three matches on the spin, including a 4-1 win over Burnley and most recently a staggering 5-0 thrashing at Sunderland, which has taken them six points clear of the relegation zone iwth just four matches of the season remaining.

Nottingham Forest only qualified for the Europa League after benefitting from UEFA’s ruling that Lyon and Crystal Palace weren’t allowed to compete in the same competition due to being owned by the same company, but have not looked back in their first European campaign in 30 years.

The Nottinghamshire side finished 13th in the league phase of their Europa League campaign, and have since knocked out Fenerbahce, Midtjylland and former European champions Porto en route to their first European semi final since 1984.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa make the short trip to Nottingham having fallen to a surprise defeat to Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday lunchtime, putting an end to their run of five wins from their last six matches.

Defeat saw Unai Emery’s side drop down to the fifth and final qualifying position for the Champions League, though with an eight point cushion over sixth placed Brighton with only four matches to play, a top five finish should be all but guaranteed.

The Spaniard also has a fantastic record in the competition, having lifted the trophy on more occasions than any other manager, winning the tournament four times in the last 12 years, thrice with Sevilla and once with Villarreal.

The Villans have been formidable in the Europa League this season, winning seven of their eight league phase matches to finish second in the table ahead of wins over Lille and Bologna, beating the latter 7-1 on aggregate in the quarter finals, and conceding just one goal in the knockout stage so far.

The West Midlands side have struggled on the road in recent weeks against domestic teams, winless in their last five games on their travels, including three defeats in their last four.

The two sides met less than three weeks ago in the Premier League, drawing 1-1 at the City Ground, leaving the Villans with just one defeat in their last five games against Forest but without a win at the City Ground from their last four visits.

All eyes will be on the all-Premier League clash between the two former European champions in a throwback clash. Bet £10 on the match and get £40 in free bets with BOYLE Sports*.
