NHL rumors: Why Maple Leafs, Flyers teamed up for blockbuster goalie trade

The Philadelphia Flyers and Toronto Maple Leafs pulled off a stunning trade recently, as the clubs swapped goalies. The Flyers sent Samuel Ersson to Toronto. Toronto meanwhile sent Joseph Woll to Philadelphia. While there were other players involved, those two players received a great deal of attention in news reports about the transaction.

The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun is giving more insight into why this deal happened.

“From a Leafs’ perspective, this was about roster flexibility, cap space and their belief in (Emil) Andrae, 24, as a good, young defenseman. The Flyers feel they’ve upgraded in goal and are excited about a Dan Vladar-Woll tandem,” LeBrun wrote.

These two teams appear to be going in two different directions. Philadelphia just made the Stanley Cup Playoffs after a six-year drought. The Flyers won a playoff series against the Pittsburgh Penguins, before getting swept by the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Flyers are young, and they hope to add even more talent.

“With Toronto acquiring Philadelphia’s third-round pick, the Flyers now hold four picks in the 2026 NHL Draft: a first-round pick (21st overall), a second-round pick (53rd overall), a sixth-round pick (181st overall), and a seventh-round pick (213th overall),” NHL.com reported.

Toronto meanwhile has not been as successful recently. The Maple Leafs missed the postseason in 2025-26, and head coach Craig Berube was fired. Maple Leafs fans hope this deal can help give the club a jumpstart.

“What I would say on this trade for Toronto is let’s see where it leads to next in terms of that roster and cap flexibility,” LeBrun wrote.

The Maple Leafs currently do not have a head coach. The team’s general manager John Chayka announced Tuesday Toronto is closing in on a hire.
