This feels like a must-win match for West Ham. Will they take care of business against Newcastle United, or can Eddie Howe’s men return to winning ways?

When West Ham United lost 1-0 to Arsenal last Sunday, their fans feared the worst.

A victory for Tottenham Hotspur over Leeds United the following night would have left West Ham four points adrift of safety with two games left to play.

Spurs took the lead through Mathys Tel in the 50th minute, but they seemed to stop playing after going ahead. 

Leeds were the better team thereafter, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin restoring parity from the penalty spot in the 74th minute. It was a goal cheered just as loudly in east London as in the away end at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs increased their advantage over West Ham last weekend, moving two points clear of West Ham in 18th. But the way their game against Leeds unfolded shifted some of the momentum back in the direction of the Hammers.

Now West Ham must respond. Tottenham are not in action again until Tuesday night, when they will face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The Blues would love to play a part in sending Spurs down.

Before that, Nuno Espirito Santo takes his team to St James’ Park. This feels like a must-win encounter for West Ham. If they do not triumph, Tottenham would avoid relegation by winning either of their final two matches. 

Success for West Ham, though, would leave Spurs in the bottom three ahead of that trip to Stamford Bridge.

Newcastle United do not have anything meaningful left to play for, although they will still be keen to sign off their season at St James’ Park with a victory.

West Ham should get something

Although it ultimately ended in disappointment, there were positives for West Ham United to take from their performance against Arsenal.

The same was true of their display in a 3-0 defeat by Brentford the previous weekend. The scoreline on that occasion did not accurately reflect the pattern of the game.

However, time is running out for West Ham. The result is all-important on Sunday. Better to win ugly than to play well and lose.

Newcastle have steadied themselves after a nightmare run of form, so West Ham will not have everything their own way. Hedge your bet via the double chance market.

No more than three goals?

West Ham United must strike the right balance at St James’ Park.

They did that well against Arsenal, surviving a difficult period early on before growing into the contest.

Although West Ham will need to commit bodies to attack in search of victory, an open game would not suit them. They must not leave themselves exposed at the back against a team like Newcastle United who are sharp in transition.

There have been no more than three goals in seven of West Ham’s last eight outings, and in seven of Newcastle’s last eight too. We do not envisage a 0-0 on Sunday either.

West Ham United strengthened their attack in the winter window, signing Pablo, Adama Traore and Taty Castellanos.

Of the three, Castellanos has made the most impact, scoring five goals in all competitions. 

Four of those strikes have come in 16 Premier League appearances, giving him a better goals-per-game ratio than anyone else in the West Ham squad.

Nuno will hope Castellanos can step up against Newcastle United. At the odds available, it is worth a punt on the Argentinian finding the net.
