Newcastle and Sunderland fans clash outside St James’ Park in ugly scenes before Tyne-Wear derby
Newcastle and Sunderland fans have clashed outside St. James’ Park ahead of today’s Tyne-Wear Derby.
The two rivals lock horns in the monster clash in Newcastle in today’s Premier League lunchtime kick off.

However, a small cluster of Sunderland fans broke away from the police escort and walked towards the large gathering of Newcastle fans.
The Black Cats supporters were attacked as they antagonised the home fans.
Supporters then made their feelings towards Sunderland known as they launched bottles and cans towards the players’ coach as it made its way towards St. James’ Park.
Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards wrote on X: “Fights have broken out close to St James’ Park. Small groups of Sunderland supporters had broken away from police escort and walked through large gathering of Newcastle fans. And were predictably attacked.”
Another said: “What a mess the police have made of this escort for the Mackems.
“Groups coming up early without police charging fans and retaliation. Then try to sneak in via a top road down on Barrack Road, only for loads of fans to charge up with riot police scrambling. Utter chaos.”
Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope added on X: “Fighting outside of St James’ Park. One fan appeared in a bad way. CPR administered before being taken away. Not good.”
However, talkSPORT understands this was due to a medical episode and is unrelated to any fan disorder.
Tonali absence
Newcastle are looking to claim a first Tyne-Wear home win since a 5-1 victory in 2010.
However, they’ll have to do so without Sandro Tonali, who misses out for the Magpies.

Tonali suffered a groin injury during the midweek 7-2 Champions League defeat to Barcelona.
While the issue isn’t thought to be serious, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe made a late call to leave the Italian out of the matchday squad.
The Magpies are already without midfielders Lewis Miley and Bruno Guimaraes, with Tonali’s absence a blow for Howe’s side.
Newcastle are hoping to earn a third successive league victory when they host rivals Sunderland.
