NBA on Prime takes shots at Shams for spoiling Thunder’s MVP announcement

The NBA on Prime’s panel didn’t let ESPN insider Shams Charania get away with spoiling their live MVP announcement, which was slated for pregame ahead of Game 7 between the Cleveland Cavs and the Detroit Pistons. Charania broke the MVP news Sunday morning instead, revealing that Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander earned back-to-back awards.

NBA on Prime hosts Taylor Rooks, alongside analysts and former NBA players, Dirk Nowitzki, and Blake Griffin, addressed Charania’s breaking news, and how it spoiled the network’s plans.

“I don’t remember Shams spoiling it back then,” Rooks said, referring to Nowitzki’s 2007 MVP honor.

“He was a baby then,” Nowitzki replied, taking a shot at Shams before Griffin called Charania by name.

“What are we doing, man,” Griffin said. “It’s Sunday, Shams, go to brunch, you, nerd.”

Steve Nash funny reaction to SGA reflecting on MVPs

NBA on Prime analyst Steve Nash can relate to back-to-back MVP awards, and he also made a funny joke, advising Thunder All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander how fast time flies. Nash won his pair of MVP honors in 2005 and 2006. When Dirk Nowitzki asked Gilgeous-Alexander how he’ll look back at this moment in the next 10-15 years, SGA attempted to guess how he’ll feel in the future.

“Probably something like damn I used to be nice,” Gilgeous-Alexander said, to which Nash confirmed as a back-to-back MVP winner.

“Yup, that’s how it feels,” said Nash, who, like Gilgeous-Alexander, won back-to-back NBA MVPs during his heydays with the Phoenix Suns. Nash won the 2004-05 and 2005-06 MVP awards.

“Hopefully I’m going to soccer practice, basketball practice, playing tennis in my free time and enjoying retirement life,” continued Gilgeous-Alexander.

Dirk Nowitski: “What do you think will be going through your mind in 10-15 years when you look back on the 2 time MVP trophies?”

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander: “Probably something like ‘Damn I used to be nice.’”

Steve Nash: “Yup, that’s how it feels.”

Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder will host MVP finalist Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals on Monday.
