Naomi Osaka’s French Open title run comes to an end vs. Aryna Sabalenka
Naomi Osaka has won four major titles, but has never won at the French Open. Osaka was in the middle of her deepest run at the French, making it to the fourth round. In the fourth round, Osaka faced off with Aryna Sabalenka in a primetime match at Roland Garros.
That would be the end of Osaka’s run, as she fell in straight sets to the top-seeded Sabalenka. Osaka had not been cruising on the clay court at Roland Garros. While she took her first round match over Laura Siegemund 6-3, 7-6, she struggled more in the second round. Facing Donna Vekic, she won 7-6, 6-4.
In the third round, it would be her hardest match of the tournament to that point. Osaka took the first set 7-6, but then fell in the second set 7-6. In the deciding third set, she won 6-4 to face Sabalenka.
Osaka took a 2-0 lead in the first set, and then a 5-4 lead. Still, Sabalenka earned a crucial break point to win the set 7-5. Sabalenka would go on to win the second set 6-3, overpowering Osaka. Overall, Osaka won just one break point, coming in the first set. Meanwhile, Sabalenka won four of five break points. Osaka never won more than 2 games in a row, and won just seven service games to Sabalenka’s nine.
Sabalenka is now 3-1 all-time against Osaka. She will face off in the quarterfinals against Diana Shnaider. Shnaider took out the last American woman in contention, defeating Madison Keys, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0. They will face off on Wednesday.
Many of the top women have been eliminated so far at the French Open, including Gauff, four-time winner Iga Swiatek, and second-ranked Elena Rybakina. The Women’s French Open Finals are set for Saturday.
