Mogul unveils historic new soccer-style college stadium amid NFL relocation plan and $5bn splurge

Pat Ryan is helping change the landscape of Illinois.

The billionaire mogul and Northwestern trustee is building the most expensive college football stadium of all time for his alma mater.

New look at Northwestern’s historic college football stadium

Journalists were given a glimpse at the $870 million arena, which will make its debut for the 2026 season as the final pieces are put together.

New Ryan Field has just 35,000 seats despite the huge cost, but the plan was always to prioritize quality over quantity.

“I truly believe it’s the best stadium in all of football,” Wildcats coach David Braun said Tuesday. “We’re not trying to be the biggest. We delivered on being the best.”

The early reaction from reporters granted access seems to agree.

With steep banks of purple seating, it gives off distinct soccer vibes.

“Struggling to wrap my mind around the fact this is Northwestern’s stadium now,” Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun Times posted on X. “I feel like I’m at a Premier League venue. It’s surreal.”

A 360-degree roof will protect fans from the elements and bounce noise back to help create an atmosphere.

The atmosphere will also be boosted by a standing student section behind the south end zone — another import from across the pond.

Three decks rise over the turf making the stadium seem far larger than it is and opposing players will feel like the crowd is on top of them.

“This entire fan base will literally be on top of you,” Braun added. “The excitement that’s created when we’re scoring touchdowns on offense, the environment that it’s going to create for our special teams with the way that ultimately, you know, the stadium protects you from some of the outside elements that we are also familiar with in the Chicagoland area.

“And ultimately, you know, the arena that it provides for us to really redefine game day.”

No expense has been spared by Ryan and the facility will be among the best in college sports.

“This place is so well thought out, how it’s structured and sight lines for everybody, explained offensive coordinator Chip Kelly. “You know, the wind because the field is below. Obviously, you’re coming in on the first level, I think the wind up there was around 90 miles an hour gusting today, and you don’t really feel it while you’re on the field.

“So just really the details that they have, it’s an amazing place.”

Bears close in on Indiana move

As Barstool Chicago’s Connor Burns joked, it might soon be the best football stadium in Illinois, period.

“I still cannot fathom that Northwestern will be playing in the nicest football stadium in Illinois,” he posted on X.

Soldier Field — the oldest in the NFL and one of the most storied buildings in U.S. sports — currently holds that honor.

But the Bears are on the move.

The McCaskey Family has signed off on abandoning the 102-year-old arena for pastures new.

The hope was to set up shop at the former Arlington International Racecourse and keep the team in Illinois, but local lawmakers failed to get a package of financial incentives over the line.

Now, the franchise is looking over state lines in Indiana, with costs expected to reach around $4.7 billion.

An official decision is yet to be made, but the heart of Illinois football could soon look very much like a European soccer stadium.
