Mike Breen gets real on lifelong dream of calling Knicks Finals run

Mike Breen has been the voice of New York Knicks television since 1997, and only once since then has the Knicks made it to the NBA Finals, when they fell to the San Antonio Spurs in five games in 1999. That all changed on Monday night, when the Knicks, with Breen on the commentators booth for ESPN in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals, clinched a spot in the 2026 NBA Finals by demolishing the Cleveland Cavaliers on the road, 130-93, to complete the sweep.

Breen, who’s basically been a lifelong Knicks fan, has endured decades upon decades of heartbreak. In 1994, they came up short in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. The 2000s was a nightmare, with front office turmoil and constant roster turnover sending the team into disarray. The success in the 2010s was short-lived. But now, after coming up short from 2023 to 2025, the Knicks are back in the big time.

Even Breen could not hide his joy behind seeing his beloved Knicks come to within four wins away of winning the fourth championship in franchise history.

“I’ve been rooting for the Knicks since I’ve been seven years old and to have a team like this is pretty darn special,” Breen told Monica McNutt, via MSG Network.

This Knicks team is certainly special; they have the right amount of star power and depth that is essential in powering any team’s championship hopes. Jalen Brunson has certainly changed this franchise’s fortunes for the better, and Breen has to be very pleased to see the team he watches the most and calls games for on the regular flourish to this degree.

Breen was only a teenager when the Knicks last won a title all the way back in 1973, and the title drought has to be gnawing at the fan inside of him that he has to keep a bit buried deep down since he has the responsibility to call games for the team. But the Knicks are so close to reaching the mountaintop, and they definitely have all the tools to win it all.
