Mets end 91-game drought with insane comeback win over Yankees

The New York Mets won their subway series with the New York Yankees, after pulling off an insane comeback for the ages. New York’s National League team was down to their last strike….but still came back to win on Sunday.

“The New York Mets, who were down by 3 runs in the 9th inning and down to their last strike, pull off wild 7-6, 10-inning victory over the Yankees,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported Sunday on X, formerly Twitter. “It snaps their drought of losing their last 91 games when trailing after 8 innings.”

The Mets won two of three in their series with the Bronx Bombers. New York’s hero on Sunday against the Yankees was Carson Benge. Benge may never have to buy a drink for himself in Queens again, after helping his team walk it off.

The Mets win on Sunday is clearly one of the team’s highlights this season. New York’s National League team has struggled, to say the least. The club is last in the National League East, with a 20-26 record.

Mets fans hope that this win over the Yankees gives the team the boost it desperately needs. New York has struggled to find wins since the middle of last season.

It wasn’t supposed to be this way for the Mets this year. Expectations were high before the season, as New York brought in several key additions including Luis Robert Jr. and Bo Bichette. Injuries have certainly been no help, as several Mets players have gone down this year to injury.

Still, the Mets have no reason to dwell on all that Sunday.

“With the team down to its final out in the ninth, Tyrone Taylor hit a game-tying three-run homer. An inning later, Carson Benge hit a walk-off fielder’s choice to steal a 7-6 Subway Series victory from the Yankees. The Mets took two of three at Citi Field, winning when trailing after eight innings for the first time since Pete Alonso homered in Game 3 of the 2024 Wild Card Series in Milwaukee,” MLB.com reported.

The Mets start a series with the Washington Nationals on Monday.
