Meet the best kept secret in British heavyweight boxing

Lewis Williams isn’t a boxer many casual observers will be familiar with, but they will be if he reaches his full potential.

The towering Leamington Spa heavyweight cuts an imposing figure at 6ft 7in tall.

However, he doesn’t move like a man of his size.

Williams is light on his feet, possesses lightning-fast hands, and has an elite boxing brain that has laid the groundwork for a decorated amateur career.

During the course of a 100-plus bout stint in the unpaid ranks, Williams picked up a 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medal, two national titles and a bronze at the European Championships.

His lofty achievements caught the eye of Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren, who snapped up the Team GB standout on a long-term professional deal in 2024.

Williams has since compiled an unblemished 4-0 record.

And while he possesses all the necessary attributes to be considered a top prospect, his name has largely flown under the radar.

Asked why he thinks that is, Williams told talkSPORT.com: “That I wouldn’t be able to tell you, to be honest.

“If I knew why, I would be doing something about it.

“But I’m not worried about that because I won’t be rushed into anything just yet.

“I’m going to carry on developing myself, and I will have my time to shine soon.”

Part of the reason Williams may not be picking up the plaudits he deserves is his lack of activity.

His shutout points win over Ben Vickers in Derby last Saturday was his first fight in eight months.

The lengthy hiatus has been through no fault of his own.

Williams has been pushing hard to get on shows and is hopeful that 2026 will be a fruitful year.

“I’m not fussed on how big or small the shows are, I just want to fight,” he added.

“I will fight where and whenever they want me, but I have my eyes on that Daniel Dubois vs Fabio Wardley undercard in May.

“I will do some pestering, and hopefully I can get put on there…

“This fight with Ben Vickers was me knocking off the cobwebs.

“I’m always in the gym, but the real practice is in the ring under the bright lights.

“I’m chuffed I got a really good opponent, who has been upsetting some good lads.

“I wasn’t able to be the first guy to put him away, but I was happy to put the wobblers on a tough man.”

Fighting for a good cause

Williams is a big man with an even bigger heart.

The 27-year-old has pledged to raise £1million during the course of his career for the Myton Hospice, which supported his father Bob with end-of-life care before he tragically passed away in 2024.

“I raised £20,000 in my first year as a professional, and I don’t intend to stop there,” said Williams.

“For now, while I’m rising through the ranks, most of the money is being raised through fundraisers, but we’ve also done some deals with sponsors for a chunk of my money to go to the hospice.

“I like the idea that I am helping a genuine charity that has been a massive help for me and other people in the area.

“You don’t know you need them until you really need them, and then they appear and do great things for families.

“They stepped in during my father’s last few weeks, and they were amazing. It was like they were part of the family.

“You couldn’t have asked for better care.”
