Liberty legend gets standing ovation at Barclays Center

The New York Liberty got to enjoy honoring one of their legendary alumni with Teresa Weatherspoon making an appearance in their home game against the Indiana Fever on Saturday night.

Weatherspoon played eight seasons in the WNBA from 1997 to 2004, seven of them with the Liberty. She shined throughout her time with the franchise, winning Defensive Player of the Year twice in 1997 and 1998. She also racked up five All-Star selections and landed on four All-WNBA teams, eventually making the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Weatherspoon appeared in 220 games throughout her stint with New York, averaging 5.7 points, 5.9 assists, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.1 steals per game. She had shooting splits of 41.3% from the field, including 28.1% from beyond the arc, and 65.8% from the free-throw line.

Weatherspoon made the move to make an appearance at New York’s game against Indiana. It was there where she got a standing ovation from the attending crowd.

How Liberty played against Fever

The Liberty made sure to honor her presence at the game by defending homecourt and securing the victory over the Fever.

Going into the fourth quarter, New York trailed 57-54 against Indiana. Despite this, they ignited on the offensive side of the ball by outscoring the Fever 29-18 in the last 10 minutes of regulation.

Three players scored in double-digits for New York in the win. Breanna Stewart led the team with 30 points, eight rebounds, four steals, and two assists. She shot 6-of-15 from the field and 18-of-21 from the free-throw line. Satou Sabally came next with 13 points and five rebounds, Pauline Astier had 12 points and three rebounds, while Jonquel Jones and Marine Johannes provided eight points each.

New York improved to a 7-4 record on the season, holding the second spot in the Eastern Conference standings. They are above the Fever and the Toronto Tempo while trailing the Atlanta Dream.

The Liberty will look forward to their next matchup, being on the road. They take on the Connecticut Sun as the contests commences on June 8 at 7 p.m. ET.
