Mavs news: Dirk Nowitzki on his statue’s status after arena change
The Dallas Mavericks announced the location for their new arena, formerly where the Valley View Mall used to be located. The hope is that the new arena will be built and open for Mavs fans to attend games by the 2031-32 season. That, however, leaves a couple of questions in place.
Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki has a statue outside the team’s American Airlines Center and also has a street named after him next to the statue called Nowitzki Way. Some folks have been wondering what will end up happening with those, and one reporter even got the chance to ask Nowitzki himself if the Mavs have given him any indication as to what’s going to happen with it.
“Yeah, I have no idea,” Dirk Nowitzki said during a recent media event. “I have no idea. Good question. I would guess it would move. It might be more portable than me at this point. I guess I’ll have to wait and see. But yeah I did see that. I don’t know if it’s final now, if that’s happening, but I haven’t really been in the Mavs loop much. Of course, there’s new leadership in place now and I’m sure there’s going to be more discussions over the next few months.”

In his 21 seasons in the NBA, Dirk Nowitzki averaged 20.7 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.4 assists. He played 1,522 career regular season games and 145 playoff games with the Mavs in that time. Nowitzki also led Dallas to the franchise’s only NBA Championship back in 2011, defeating the Miami Heat team led by LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh.
Surely, Nowitzki’s statue will be on the move and placed in a spot that will be perfect for fans to admire just outside of the new arena. But as of right now, Nowitzki hasn’t been given any indication on what will happen to it.
